VUL Commencement 2019

Vul Commencement 2019

Virginia University of Lynchburg celebrated its 129th commencement exercises on May 4, 2019, with more than 60 students receiving degrees. Nationally recognized journalist and television commentator Roland Martin joined the Class of 2019 to encourage them to speak up and make changes in American society.

Roland warmed up the crowd by having pianist, Rev. Dr. Philip Campbell, play some lively music. The enthusiastic audience sang along with Beverly Powell, who was in attendance to celebrate the graduation of her stepdaughter Amiracle Powell.  Martin, who has been a CNN commentator and host of the programs “News One Now” and “Washington on Watch with Roland S. Martin,” addressed the graduates with humor and candor.  He stressed that as alumni the new graduates must support historically black universities, like VUL, for the coming generations of African- American students.

Martin received an honorary degree along with Gloria Williams Campbell, known as “Mother Campbell.” Campbell was a civil rights activist in the sixties and participated in many non-violent marches to protest unfair treatment of Blacks in all areas of society. In 1963 Campbell was participating in a prayer vigil that turned deadly. As she exited the church she and other demonstrators were beaten by local police and state troopers. Forty-seven people, including Campbell, had to be taken to the hospital. She was the only preacher’s wife and first lady to demonstrate. Campbell is the Founding Mother of Bible Way Cathedral in Danville and continues to speak out for civil rights for all those treated unfairly in society.
