Hiring Process

As an ever-changing and growing institution, new opportunities become available regularly. Please check the Job Opportunities web page often. Qualified candidates are screened and interviewed and contacted by the supervisor within the hiring department

Review the following steps about VUL’s hiring process. (expand/collapse each of these)

1. Review open positions found on the job oppurtunity webpage.

Virginia University of Lynchburg only accepts applications and resumes for open positions posted on our Job Opportunities web page.

2. Submit an employment application

The application may be submitted online or by mailing or faxing a hardcopy. All contact information is located on the Job Opportunities web page. A cover letter and/or resume or curriculum vitae may also be submitted and are highly recommended to further highlight knowledge, skills, and abilities.

3. Application will be recieved by the hiring manager

Applications are tracked by the Human Resources database and then forwarded to the hiring manager for his or her review. (For student positions, applications and resumes may be given directly to the point of contact listed in the student job posting.)

4. Interview will take place with the hiring manager

It is up to the manager’s discretion to contact any applicants for further information or to schedule an interview. Due to the large volume of applications received, applicants not selected for an interview may not be contacted.

5. Reference check are completed by the hiring manager

For the final candidates, at least two of the applicants’ references will be contacted by the hiring manager.

6. A background investigation will be required

A background check will be requested prior to an offer of employment. The potential candidate will be notified via email to provide necessary background check information and authorization. Human Resources will process the background check and notify the hiring manager upon completion

7. An employment offer may be made by the hirging manager

Once all employment considerations have been approved by Human Resources and the department head, an offer of employment may be extended to the selected candidate.

8. The new employee form, Form I-9, and other employment paperwork will be completed on or before the first work date.

The new employee will be given information regarding when to start, where and when to arrive, and what documents to bring to verify eligibility to work in the United States.

FAQ

How long does it take to complete the employment application?

The application may take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. The more information you provide, the easier it will be to effectively evaluate your skills, abilities, and qualifications. It may be advisable to have any applicable resources accessible while completing the application (i.e., employment history, related knowledge, skills and abilities, Christian testimony, reference information, etc.).

Do I have to fill out an employment application or can I just send in my resume?

You must submit an application for each position for which you wish to apply.

Can I submit my resume to be kept on file until a suitable position is avilable?

We do not accept unsolicited resumes or applications. You must submit an application for a specific position listed on our career site. Once you upload your resume it will be stored for future submissions. You may make edits as needed on the career site if any of your information changes.

What if I want to apply for more than one position at VUL?

You must submit a separate application for each position for which you wish to apply.

How long does the hiring process take?

The process can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. This may be dependent on a number of factors, including but not limited to: the size and quality of the applicant pool, urgency to fill an open position, related budget planning, etc.

How often are new positions posted?

New positions are posted as soon as a new job opening is available and approved. Updates may occur on a daily or weekly basis. Continue to check the Career Site. If there are specific positions you are interested in applying to, job alerts may be set up through the career site.

Is there a job closing date for any open positions?

Unless otherwise noted within the job description listed, jobs are kept open until filled.

What documents will I need to bring on my first day of work?

You may bring or complete the Form I-9 in order to determine eligibility for employment in the United States.
