The men and women of VUL continue to excel in both indoor and outdoor track events. Under Coach Tony Franklin, VUL attended the 2019 National Christian College Athletic Association Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships. At the NCCAA Indoor Championships at Cedarville University in Ohio VUL Sophomore Tomas Newman finished 2nd in the 60 Meter Dash. Newman gains All-American status with that accomplishment. Teammate and Junior Devine Fenner came in 4th. In addition, Freshman Taijah Bradley represented the VUL women with a 5th place finish in the Pentathlon – a five-event competition involving hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and a flat race of 800 meters in one day.
The NCCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May at Grace College in Indiana saw even more success by the VUL athletes. The men’s team placed 3rd in the 4×100 meter relay, which gave the team All-American status. Members of the team were Damario Carroll, Devine Fenner, Brian Moses, and Tomas Newman. Junior Jonathan Romero earned a 3rd place finish in the grueling decathlon – ten events over two days. That win also earned Romero All-American status. Finally, Freshman Muhammad Fulani placed 4th in the 400-meter hurdles.
